Soaring Eagles….Imagine the Possibilities
1. Freshman Connection: Freshman Connection was a great success. The program ended on July 30th. 194 freshmen took advantage of our three week program. As a result, these 194 students will be prepared and ahead of the game come September. We also had a wonderful end of the year celebration Friday, July 30; fourteen freshmen and two youth leaders won bikes and all students took home school supplies, flash drives, gift cards, books, and other treats. 2. Nursing Program: The CPS practical nursing program graduation ceremony took place over the summer. Students Roberto Aguillon, Silvia Alba, Karina Aranda, Yolanda Gallo, and Nelly Jimenez successfully completed the program. The students are preparing to take the comprehensive exams and the state boards.
Five new students were accepted to our nursing program for the 2010 academic year: Sandra Ortega, Cynthia Salinas, Guadalupe Urbina, Viridiana Alvarado, and Carina Oceguera.
3. Columbia College Upward Bound On Saturday, July 31, I attended the closing ceremony of the Upward Bound program. Many of our upperclassmen won awards for outstanding achievement in the arts. Many of our incoming freshmen also participated in the program and were recognized for outstanding performance.
4. Club M3: 23 soaring eagles ran the half marathon on August 1. In preparation for the event, the team celebrated with a pasta party at Maggiano’s.
5. Summer School: The second semester of summer school ended on Friday, August 6. 263 students successfully recovered their credit and are back on track.
6. Iron Oaks Ropes Course 63 students attended the Freshman Connection field trip to Irons Oaks ropes course. Our excursion was wonderfully successfully. Our students faced each challenge together and each group emerged as a team at the end of the day. A special thanks to our volunteers: Mr. Gamez, Mr. Levy, Mrs. Bigelow, Mr. Stosek, Mr. Heredia (BAM).

Juarez Scholarship Winners 1. Congratulations to the following Juarez Scholarship recipients. Class of 2010 2. The graduating class of 2010 has been awarded 4.1 million dollars in scholarships. Congratulations to all the students.
Sports Awards Banquet 3. Thank you to all the coaches for making the Sports Awards Banquet such a tremendous success following a great year in athletics. It was a great night for our student-athletes. It is wonderful to see the love and energy all the coaches have for their programs and student athletes.
Architecture Program 4. Karla Morado and Jovana Ibarra won a 6 week paid summer internship with architecture firms based on their performance in the Newhouse Architecture competition.
Soaring Eagle 5. Senior Sergio Trevino won the Comcast Student of the Year Scholarship. Sergio won a $9,000 scholarship.
Information Technology 6. The following Information Technology students have been accepted for paid internships this summer giving them valuable work experience in areas of science and technology: Fernando Araujo -- EPIR Jose Galarza -- IIT Rigoberto Garcia -- City of Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection/Finance and Payroll Department.
DCCP Department 7. The following students recently passed the Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS) Certification exams in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. These certifications are real-world, adult-level certifications indicating the students have a very high level of proficiency in the software. Special congratulations goes to Jose Quintino for being the only student to pass the daunting Microsoft Access test and to Laura Benitez, Jose Galarza, and Eduardo Villanueva for passing both the Excel and Word tests!

Saturday Academy 9.) Fourty five freshmen successfully completed the Saturday Academy. All the students recovered their credit and are now back on track. Thank you to all the teachers and staff and to our partners and friends at Sun Trading for the many hours devoted to our students.

Special recognition was given to Noe Ochoa and Alejandro Aguirre for helping out with keeping the band room in order as well doing repairs when needed.
Freshman Connection 11.) 248 students have registered for Freshman Connection. That is 99% of our goal. Freshman Connection starts July 12 and ends July 31.
Juarez Blood Drive 12. The JROTC department hosted the annual Juarez blood drive. Of the 46 units collected, 42 units were whole blood and 4 units were double red cells. Since one blood donation can save up to three lives, the units collected at this drive will potentially save 138 lives. We extend our gratitude to everyone who gave unselfishly of themselves to help others!
Attendance, Grades and Summer School 13. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are full days of attendance. Attendance is not projected for Tuesday and Wednesday. Please remind students that they must be present all week except Thursday. Grades must be in by MONDAY at 3 p.m.
Summer School registration forms will be in division teacher’s mailboxes. Please distribute to students as you receive them.

JROTC awards 1. Attached please find the JROTC awards for this year’s cadets as awarded by instructors Hobbs and Zepeda. Congratulations to all the students for their dedication and leadership throughout the year.
Memorial Day Honored 2. The Juarez Drumline and JROTC participated in the Memorial Day parade. This event took place in downtown Chicago on Saturday, May 29th, 2010. There were over 8,000 participants in this parade and it was televised live on ABC channel 7. Great job to our students!

Debate Team: 4. I received the following note from Less Lynn, Executive Director of the Chicago Debate Commission: Juarez met the Participation Standard at every tournament this year and increased its participation by 113% compared to 2008-2009. It also had an extremely strong year competitively. Juarez’s debate program is making impressive strides forward – for the benefit of Juarez students. One simple word: Congratulations. A special thanks to Andrea Drew, Samuel Sanchez, Edson Garcia, Farrah Sawyer, and the Debate Coaches for making this year a tremendous success.
Senior Prom 5.Senior Prom took place at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel on Friday. The event was put together by the senior council and sponsored by teachers Shabib and Koulogeorge. Everyone was elegantly dressed and a good time was had by all. A special thanks to all the teachers and staff who attended for making the evening special for our students.

College Tour for Juniors 1. On Monday, May 24th, 48 juniors participated in a college tour: 20 students visited De Paul, 17 students visited NLU, and 11 students visited DeVry and Arturo Velazquez Institute. The students received information on admissions and financial aid.
Library Media Center 2. The library has been awarded a $6,000 grant by the Laura Bush Foundation to build its non-fiction collection, with a particular focus on books that support the social studies curricula. The library will work with the social studies team to identify materials for acquisition. Café con el Director 3. Café con el Director was a great success once again. The parents received information on the final exams, end of year events, and Parent University summer events.
Soaring Eagle 4. Student Nora Castrejon won the Jiffy Lube $7,500.00 scholarship. She is a current driver’s education student and had to write an essay on “The Road to a Successful Future”. Her essay won her the scholarship. She will be the 4th daughter in college and this money will be extremely helpful come senior year.
High School Investigation Day 5. HSID took place on May 27. Juarez played host to more than three hundred 8th grade students. The 8th graders were entertained by the Juarez cheerleaders and drum line. The 8th graders were also led on tours of the building by student leaders. All of the 8th graders were able to register for the Freshman Connection summer program.
Staff Appreciation Day 6. The National University of Health Sciences' Chicago Whole Health located at 720 W. Maxwell will be visiting our school for a Staff Appreciation Day. University interns will bring chiropractic tables to the school and perform 5-10 minutes of soft tissue massage, stretching and some chiropractic adjustments, if necessary. We hope teachers will enjoy this service, especially after a long school year. Staff Appreciation Day will be Wed. 6/2 from 12 noon- 4 p.m. and Thursday 6/3 from 8 a.m.-12 noon in the conference room.
